Apple's profit from sale of single iPhone 3gs

Apple makes a profit of whooping $400 to $500 through everyone iPhone 3gs that has been sold. This is a considerable amount of profit and might act as a counter force against the current economic recession.
I don't know how would this affect the economic recession though but with a lot of cellphones being bought by millions of people, I think there are still people who are not affected by it.
The only way this makes sense is if it is the cell phone providers who pay for them through Apple, and it is THEM that is offering the discount. Really it seems a big high in terms of profit margin, but if so, I don't see how this stimulates the economy apart from stimulating Apple.
Just bc there's a recession doesn't mean they should stop doing business or lower it too much, it's still their business and people are employed making money
