From what I've seen, it compass works independently so I don't think you need to have a GPS connection otherwise that'll be another expense. I think it's pretty cool technology.
Well, this is that kind of stuff, that nobody really needs. How often will you be in a place, where you can not find your way out without a compass? Me- never.
It can help if you have a map and no GPS, and just having it for the coolness factor of it being able to do anything. Besides, most GPS' are off by several meters most of the time.
I would think it would need to work on its own, but admittedly, I haven't looked into this feature. It's just common sense that you should be able to use this on its own; otherwise, it would be worthless.
It has a compass? didn't know that, how cool. I used to have one on the dash in my car, it comes in handy during heavy snows when you can't see which way your going.
The Maps and compass facility is very robust in case of iphone3 gs. iPhone 3G S finds your location quickly and accurately via GPS, Wi-Fi,
and cellular towers. Drop a pin to mark your location or share it with
others via email or MMS.A built-in digital compass rotates maps to always match the direction you’re facing. You can also use the compass on its own.
I won a bet because of the compass. I bet my buddies about the direction of a city and was right because I looked at my phone pretending to be texting!
