Iphone 3gs locked - No SIM card installed issue?

Hi My brother sent me an iphone 3gs from uk which I believe was locked to some network in UK. I updated the current version of 3gs to ios 4.0.1. After completing the update it is showing me this message --No SIM card installed Insert a valid SIM with no pin lock to activate the iphone. I have tried to unlock it via snowbreeze and redsnow but everytime it says the IPSW is not valid. Please help. Thanks Poor Taste?
