unlocking brand new iphone 3GS

Hi, i just bought a brand new iphone 3gs locked to BELL. my sim card is FIDO and of course i pop it in the phone and it doesnt work... so i'm just wondering if i need to do any updates before unlocking the phone on my own.. i've watched this tutorial video and got a good idea of how to do it. remember now its FRESH out of the BOX, 3GS, and im only wondering if there are any updates BEFORE unlocking/jailbreaking the phone on my own, if no please tell me !! THX Poor Taste?
